October is LGBTQ History Month!

This month we can learn about the history of the LGBTQ+ movement and see role models who best represent and address the issues of the LGBTQ+ community.  Together we can contribute to the observance of LGBTQ history month which was created by a Missouri high school teacher named Rodney Wilson in 1994.

The month-long celebration is most prominent in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Hungary, Brazil, and the city of Berlin. Celebrations vary across countries and cities.  Let’s celebrate the history of diversity with the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community, and the importance of civil rights movements in progressing gay rights.

Family building through fertility treatments can be accomplished and our caring and compassionate team will work closely with you to find the best option for you and/or your partner.

Same Sex (Male) Family Building

Same-sex couples and single men may create their families by using a combination of donor eggs, their own sperm, and a gestational carrier (surrogate). The egg donor can be anonymous, or they can be a person known to the intended parents. The surrogates are always known to the intended parents and often form a close relationship with them throughout the pregnancy.

Once the donor and surrogate are chosen, our fertility specialists will use in vitro fertilization (IVF) to fertilize the donor eggs with sperm from the intended parent(s). Once completed, the fertility specialist can transfer the embryo into the gestational carrier (surrogate).

Same-Sex (Female) Family Building

For a same-sex couple and single females, family planning options typically include fertility treatments such as intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF). Our Third-Party Coordinators can guide you through the sperm donation process and can help you to coordinate your preferences with sperm banks or a fresh donor.

Here are some questions same-sex couples may need to consider:

  • Which partner will provide the eggs or sperm?
  • Who will carry the baby?
  • Has a sperm or egg donor been selected?Sometimes one partner will choose to donate the eggs and the other partner will carry the pregnancy, this is known as co-maternity.  Reciprocal IVF, also referred to as co-maternity, is a fertility treatment option for same-sex (female or trans men) couples that allows both partners to be involved in the IVF process.  After the fertilized embryo is created, it is then transferred to the second partner.
