Intrauterine Insemination
Come for our expertise, stay for our care.
IUI is a relatively simple, minimally invasive procedure where a sample of concentrated, healthy sperm is inserted into the uterus using a thin, flexible catheter (tube). It’s done during ovulation to ensure the sperm can meet the egg at the best time. The average IUI cycle takes around 2 weeks to complete.
IUI is a great place to start if you have unexplained infertility, are using a sperm donor, have sexual dysfunction, or have a partner with low sperm count, motility or shape. It is less invasive and less costly than IVF but also has lower success rates.
What to expect
Preparation and Education
- In the month leading up to your cycle, our nursing team will provide you with instructions detailing the whole IUI process. Our goal for this month is to ensure you move forward with your treatment feeling confident and at ease.
Day 1
- This is the first day of your menstrual cycle. Your IUI cycle begins! Some cycles can include oral tablets or injections. These are usually started within the first week.
Cycle Monitoring & Egg Maturation
- We’ll begin monitoring ovulation and the growth of your egg starting around day 10 of your cycle. You’ll need 2-4 morning appointments for blood tests and internal ultrasounds. Based on your hormones, follicle size, and endometrial lining thickness, your doctor will choose the best day for insemination.
Insemination Day
- Sperm will be collected from your partner or donor on the morning of your insemination. If sperm was frozen in advance, we’ll thaw it on this day. Our lab will prepare your sperm to ensure the most active, healthy sperm is used for the insemination.
- The IUI is a quick and painless procedures which takes 5-10 minutes in our exam room. Your doctor will insert a speculum to view your cervix. Using a soft, flexible catheter (tube), the prepared sample will be inserted and released into the uterus in hopes of the sperm swimming into the fallopian tube to meet the egg.
Pregnancy Test
- We can do a pregnancy blood test 12-14 days after your insemination. If the test is done at our clinic, we’ll have results to you on the same day.
